چکیده

Flexible flapping wings have garnered a large amount of attention within the micro aerial vehicle community: a critical component of computationalmicro aerial vehicle simulations is the representation of the structural dynamics behavior of the flapping-wing structure. This paper discusses the development of a new nonlinear finite element solver that is based on a corotational approach and suitable for simulating flapping plate/shell-like wing structures undergoing small strains and large displacements/rotations. Partial verification and validation studies are presented on rectangular/elliptic wing structures to test the rigid body kinematics, nonlinear statics, and dynamics capabilities of the solver. Results obtained showed good agreement with available analytical/experimental/commercial solutions. The new structural dynamics formulation along with the numerical test cases contribute to the very limited set of tools and examples existing in the flapping-wing micro aerial vehicle literature.

Loading Estimation of Flapping Wings under Aeroelastic Effect Using Finite Element Method

The aim of this paper is to provide an aeroelastic computational tool which determines the induced wing loads during flapping flight. For this purpose, a Finite Element (FE) code based on a four-node plate bending element formulation is developed to simulate the aeroelastic behavior of flapping wings in low incompressible flow. A quasi-steady aerodynamic model is incorporated into the aeroelast...

Flapping Wing Air Vehicles at Kaist

The flapping wing flight has superior maneuverability and aerodynamic advantages in a low Reynolds number regime. Nature’s flyers generate aerodynamic forces and moments from the various wing motions such as flapping and pitching to fly and sustain its flight stability. Bioinspired design of flapping air vehicle is one of the effective ways to exploit such a complex system. However the flapping...
